Reader response 1b draft 1

Updated: 2nd Oct, 2:24pm, 2nd Oct, 7:02pm

The webpage “Review: the DJI Mini 2 is the perfect drone for beginners” from Murphy (2020), presents the features and functions of DJI’s photography drone for beginners. The DJI MINI 2 features includes a lightweight design, “OcuSync 2.0 transmission, 12-megapixel camera, 3-axis motorized gimbal, Return-To-Home(RTH) function and long flight time. Weighing at 249g and a folded dimension of 131x81x58mm” making it convenient to be brought out for photo and video shoots. One of the features includes capturing high quality footage and photos with “4K resolution at up to 30 frames per second with the 12-megapixel camera” (Kronfli & Wilson, 2022). The DJI Mini 2 uses OcuSync 2.0 transmission for a dependable and long-range distance operation of up to 10 kilometers (Pete R, 2023). The drone is equipped with a 3-axis motorized gimbal that provides stability and smooth footage, even in windy conditions or during rapid maneuvers. In addition, this drone features the RTH function which allows the drone to automatically return to its takeoff location if it loses contact with the remote controller or when the battery is critically depleted (Murphy, 2020). The drone offers an impressive flight time of up to 31 minutes when fully charged, allowing good productivity in a single flight (“DJI Mini 2 VS Mavic Mini”, 2020). The technology and affordability that DJI Mini 2 possesses is a highly recommended entry-level drone as compared to its antecedent, the DJI Mavic Mini, among users that own both drones.

One such feature of the Mini 2, is its high-quality footage and photography that records at a maximum video 4K resolution at up to 30 frames per second. The camera includes a 12-megapixels lens with zoom capabilities such as 2 times and up to 4 times to focus on every detail which Mavic Mini is not equipped with. The benefitted users might feel the insecurity of the camera attached to the drone but with its 3-axis motorized gimbal, it locks the camera in place from 3 different planar. However, the camera might seem heavy but that is not the case for Mini 2 as it only weighs 249g, the same weight as Mavic Mini but with better functions.

Another feature is the OcuSync 2.0 transmission that allows stronger connectivity from the remote controller and the drone of maximum distance up to 10 kilometers unlike Mavic Mini with a threshold of 4 kilometers. The reliability of OcuSync 2.0 with its long-distance operation enhances a wider range of exploration of scenic videography standards that users such as photographers look for that Mavic Mini could never meet. Users can rest assured as signal fading will never be a problem for long range operation to continue reliable video transmission while in the air.

In addition, the Mini 2 has a new function that was not introduced in Mavic Mini, called “Return-to-home” function. It basically returns the drone to its launch-off location if it disconnects from the remote controller or when the battery life is down. The battery also has a flight time of 31 minutes when fully charged allowing efficient production of videography in a single flight. Not only that, it also has constant upgrades made on older versions to match on the level of newer and better versions.

It may seem like Mini 2 is the best choice in terms of specifications but the quality of technology of Mavic 2 Pro provides to end users with far higher end technologies which outclass Mini 2 in general and can be used professionally in any aspect.

In conclusion, Mini 2 is an excellent choice for entry level in terms of cost affordability and technology wise. Its purpose helps in warehouse management or can also be used for leisure videography hobby. However, if buyers intend to start off a drone without the cost being an issue, the Mavic 2 Pro will be a better option as it outclasses Mini 2.

Week 2 Submission 1a: Descriptive Reflection (Formal Introductory Letter)

 In the form of a formal letter to your instructor, you should provide a descriptive

Reflection in which you do each of the following:

1. explain your educational background and interest in engineering;

2. discuss one communication strength and one weakness, with illustrations of both;

3. present two specific goals you have for the module;

4. and explain what differentiates you from others (steps toward a personal brand).

This should be approximately 300 words.

Subject: Self-Introduction

Dear Professor Blackstone,

My name is Yu Siang and my purpose for this letter is to introduce myself to you. I am currently a year one student studying Mechanical Engineering attending your critical thinking and communicating module.

Since young, I was intrigued by technological advances and their potential benefits and ease it brings for our future. This sparked my interest in engineering and since I love Mathematics and Physics subjects, I tend to excel in those modules that has Mathematics or Physics involved in it. In Polytechnic, I studied Diploma in Industrial and Operations Management and decided to pursue further studies in the engineering path. Being a curious minded student, I challenged myself and took up a Diploma Plus in Advanced Mathematics on my own accord to expand my knowledge and mathematical ability. In addition, to prepare for further studies in Industrial and Systems Engineering in NUS when I graduate, which undoubtedly came in handy in future applications such as during my internship. However, it did not went as I had planned out because they require a higher GPA, so I settled for SIT Mechanical Engineering to branch out my potential career prospects.

As an engineer, I agree with the stigma of us being weak in communication, but my strength in communication is non-verbal ques. I am strong in terms of having good body language such as maintaining constant eye contact and good tone as I project my thoughts across to whoever I am speaking to. This enables me to positively impact the other party willingly to be on the same level of communication mood setting and that will easily clarify and share ideas with one and another for better team based projects.

Although, my strength in communication is a valuable asset, I am bound to have weakness in communicating at times which is the inability to prolong conversations. For example, when I debate on a particular topic with another party, I tend to be overwhelmed and unable to keep up with overloaded information which results in being nervous to speak up. The state of nervousness decrease my confidence in speaking as I will be talking off the point and be processing all the information rather than trying to prolong conversations.

Through this module, my specific goals are speaking with confidence while reducing the use of fillers followed by proper sequential structure in writing and speaking. Whenever I speak, I tend to say whatever comes to mind and lack of time to process what I want to say beforehand which results in blabbering and using fillers to buy myself some time to think through on the spot. Without a proper structure of my thought process, I find it hard to stay on the point and side track to irrelevant topics that does not link to the initial idea.

With weaknesses that limits me, something that differentiates me from others is being open-minded and an explorer. I am open-minded in terms of inviting myself to face various challenges such as taking up a Maritime Industry Case Competition by NTU as a year one student back in polytechnic. I refer that as gutsy and willing to try and learn because the competition write up on technological breakthroughs in the future of maritime industry, a sector I was completely inexperienced with. I explored the current and futuristic plans and came up with solutions with regards to blockchain and drone applications although the modules I had back then was not that in-depth into certain industry. I did not make it through the first stage but this competition realise my potential in progressive and self improving mindset still stays in me up till this day.

Best Regards,

Yu Siang

Instructional Unit 02 4.3 -> Content, Language use, Organization

Content:

In 2nd para, he can share an example of a value he has gained from others so far and how it might have altered with his mindset on that particular subject.

In 2nd para, there are certain sentences that are too short and he should continue his sentence of " I have quite a few notable hobbies." instead of stopping there and also explain how certain sport intrigued or excites him instead of just stating them.

At the end of 2nd para, he can further talk about what are some take away or clarification he can obtain and potentially what he intends to do in the future rather than talking about the love for this course.

He certainly has a wide coverage of content in 2nd para but with one liner sentences.

In 3rd para, he can provide what are some opportunities he wants to take from the module to upskill or improve from his weak public speaking skills. Something good is that he provide example of being better in speaking in a smaller setting environment.

Language use:

The addressing of Prof Isabel should have been spelled in full term, "Professor Isabel" since it is a formal letter and shouldnt sound informal for a first impression.

The use of short-forms such as "Poly" in the second paragraph should be refrained in a formal letter and instead, spelt in full form, "Polytechnic".

Organization:

The subject header gives an impression of him as someone that does not put in effort and very casual. I suggest it to be changed to as simple as "Self-Introduction".

He gave a sequential flowing format of his letter from introduction to strengths and branch out to weaknesses and how he wants to improve.

Interpretation of quotation

In my opinion, being a leader requires good communication skills to convey message in clear and concise manner to provide ideas, tasks and better manage a team setting. With these basic functions, the key success of growing together and working closely in the right direction with the help of motivations from words of a leader will be everlasting. In addition, a leader shares knowledge and provide insights from past experiences that will potentially guide others on how to approach individual taskings. It also gives the team benefit of doubt and believes their best approach is also a way of motivation and enthusiasm to complete the task. Thus, it is essential that a leader possess good communication skills to get objectives completed in a clear manner.
